Helping Hands from
Distant Lands
Share Their Talents
Volunteers have been an indispensable asset in the sisters’ ministries
for many years, and occasionally they are blessed with some who offer their
services full-time for a period of weeks or even months.
This fall, four volunteers came to help--Curtis and Erika Soderbeck
from St. Paul, Minnesota, and Jean Daly and Marie Gordon from Leamington
Spa, England.
Jean and Marie, childhood friends, had often dreamed of making an extend-
ed visit to a monastery, and, having recently retired, were able to realize their dream
at St. Scholastica. Jean baked for the Bake Sale, helped at the Retreat Center, and
visited with the sisters in the infirmary. Marie spent most of her time in the infirmary,
visiting and chatting with the sisters, doing their nails and putting cream on their
hands and faces. She revived the 4 p.m. Rosary group during her visit.
“I cannot believe how welcoming everyone has been to us, and I will
have such fond memories,” Jean said. Both Jean and Marie have joined the
Oblate program and hope to return to volunteer next fall.
Curtis and Erika, who have made five or six visits to the monastery,
some brief and some extended, spent six weeks volunteering in December and
January. Curtis enjoys working with maintenance supervisor Ed Elkins and his
crew, and Erika, a long-term employee at St. Paul’s Monastery, St. Paul, Min-
nesota, helps in the laundry and the retreat center and monastery kitchens.
“There’s really something special about being on this hill,” Curtis said. “It’s so
peaceful and enjoyable.”
Sister Maria DeAngeli, speaking for the community, said that the sisters
loved the “peaceful energy” of the Soderbecks and the “joy and laughter and
life” of Marie and Jean. “I think they’ve brought a lot of happiness to the sisters
in the infirmary,” she said.
Curtis and Erika Soderbeck relax in
their home away from home. Below, Sr.
Madeline Bariola and Erika put away
the Christmas decorations at the Retreat
Center.

FROM HEAD TO TOE.”
A Message From the Prioress
As we begin the New Year of 2010 (already into the second month) I think back and
ponder over all the events of the past year. One word springs to mind--GRATITUDE.
We, as the community of St. Scholastica’s, are most grateful to all who have given to
us in many and sundry ways. Each and every one of you is remembered daily in our
prayers.
We are grateful that the monastery roof was completed, although there have been
a few recalls to the roofers to return for a few repairs. Work began on the interior
walls of the chapel on January 13th. We moved our Worship Space to our commu-
nity room during work on the north wall. The south wall was not damaged so painters matched the paint
as best they could so the entire chapel did not have to be repainted. It was a little congested at times
but we managed.
February brings another type of GRATITUDE to mind. The gratitude to Jesus as we begin the
season of Lent. Lent seems to take on a somber attitude as we recall and journey with Jesus in his
sufferings that won our salvation.
We enter into this Holy Season with gratitude for Jesus giving of himself for us, with our own
resolutions of different fasting and good works. While we make efforts to keep Lent before us daily as
St. Benedict tells monastics in his Rule, we also look forward with expectation to Easter, the celebration
of the Paschal Mystery.
Let us then, this Season of Lent, be faithful to what we have resolved to do as we journey with
Jesus in faith, hope, and love, so that we may BE, as St. Augustine says, “AN ALLELUIA PEOPLE
Several hundred people filled the monastery and its park-
ing lots to overflowing at the St. Scholastica Art Tour Octo-
ber 17. The visitors, many of whom had never been to the
monastery, learned about Benedictine history from Sister
Pierre (pictured below) and toured the first three floors of
the building, stopping to visit with sisters in the infirmary.
Many guests chatted with Sister Elise at the information
table to learn about our programs and ministries.

decreased substantially due to the economic crisis.

Haymée Guiliani, a native of Mexico, to give us three Oblates with
international backgrounds.
Haymée, who teaches Spanish at Trinity Junior High School, has
been offering conversational Spanish classes to the sisters every Fri-
day afternoon after school. Eighteen sisters and a few friends of the
sisters are studying Spanish, and small groups of sisters can frequently
be found practicing their new language skills before class. Groups from
the monastery are getting to know the Hispanic community through at-
tending Hispanic Masses at area parishes and participating in their cul-
tural celebrations.
Ann McElmurry (R) and her conference roommate,
Mary Ann Latona, at the monastery at Monte Cassino
last October.
Oblate Ann McElmurry, an Arkansas native who lives in Little Rock, had the opportunity to
meet with 230 other Oblates from all over the world at the Second World Benedictine Congress in Rome,
Italy last October. The dream and vision of the congress, “The Religious Challenges of Today -- the Bene-
dictine Answer,” was carried out in daily liturgical prayer, conferences and group discussions. Each day, the
Oblates attended Mass, Lauds, Vespers and Compline, and each day priest-delegates from different coun-
tries celebrated the liturgies. Two additional prayer vigils -- one ecumenical and one interreligious -- were
held during the congress.
Although many presentations were led by Benedictine priests and sisters, delegates also attended a
panel discussion presided over by a Hindu nun, a Shiite Muslim scholar and a Buddhist monk who shared
insights on their forms of contemplative prayer. Group
discussions allowed participants to continue to process
the insights they had learned and apply them to their
lives. Pope Benedict XVI greeted the oblates at an au-
dience Oct. 4.
Ann was particularly inspired by the Vietnamese
Oblates who were unable to purchase the Rule of Bene-
dict or the Benedictine medal under communist rule.
They downloaded the Rule on computer and cast their
own molds of the medal.
The language differences seemed unimportant
as the Oblates prayed, studied, and toured Subiaco and
Monte Cassino together. “We shared many ‘Pentecost’
moments,” Ann said during her presentation at the Oc-
tober Oblate meeting.
To better serve our Oblates, whether they live
locally or a distance away, we would like to establish an
Oblate Board. The Board will give input on future pro-
grams and outside activities the Oblates can participate
in as a group, as well as share ideas about how we can
best reach Oblates who live far from the monastery or
who are homebound. Call Sister Magdalen if you would
like to volunteer to serve on the Board.
Our upcoming Oblate meetings will follow the
9:30 Sunday Mass on March 21, April 18, and May 16.
Be sure to check our website, www.stscho.org, for daily
Mass readings and monastery news.

Oblate
Prayer
O Loving God, I ask your blessing this day
on all the Oblates of St. Benedict, and those
with whom we are affiliated. Help us to become
people of prayer and peace. Though scat-
tered for and wide, help us to be together in
the spirit of your love. Give us hearts wide
enough to embrace each other as well as
those whose lives we touch. Enable us to
listen and to learn from each other and those
around us each day. May we be models in our
homes, neighborhoods, and communities
of wise stewardship, dignified human labor,
sacred leisure, and reverence for all living
things. Above all, O God, may our presence
among others be a constant witness of justice,
compassion, and hope to all. AMEN.

flavor as Sister Magdalen welcomed our two English volunteers, Jean
Daly and Marie Gordon, to the Oblate Program. Marie and Jean join
Hope What Isn’t YET
"Hope is always about what isn't," I say. And then, weaving its way through my accusations, silently and
gently squeezing in, just in time, “YET” falls from Heaven and slips into place.
“This word finds its way through a small space between our tightly clasped hands. It adds itself, com-
pleting and changing the meaning, filling our hearts with truth, and overflowing them with hope. In that
instant I say and know the truth: Hope is not about what isn't. Hope is always about what isn't yet.”
- Dierdra D. Riggs
I love this quote from Deidra D. Riggs. As
I read her words it describes for me just where
we are with vocation ministry. The heart of vo-
cation ministry is an everyday hope for what
isn’t yet. The reality of a religious calling may
seem as distant and remote as ever, and it may
seem as if the numbers of those seeking a pos-
sible vocation as a religious is still at what many
call a crisis stage, but for me and my sisters, it
is more than that—it’s about what isn’t yet. As
one who envisions religious life with eager pas-
sion there are glimmers of hope all around us--
those who connect with the sisters of St. Scho-
lastica on a variety of levels. Many come to us
seeking respite, spiritual guidance, prayer and
a connection with God that sometimes ordinary
everyday life cannot provide. This holds true
for the women who come to our monastic doors
seeking the God who calls. Those who come to
visit us carry with them the Hope for what Isn’t
Yet but may very well be one day. For those
who are still searching we invite you to come
and see what our life is like and if God is bless-
ing you with hope in our way of life. Please
meet some of the women who have attended our Come and See experiences in recent months. These
and many other vocation inquirers give us hope. Let’s keep hope as a truth, a trust and a friend for all
time.

RETURN SERVICE REQUESTED
On October 8-13, Sisters Kimberly Prohaska
and Alice O’Brien attended the National Benedictine
Vocation Directors Conference in Collegeville, Min-
nesota.
Sister Maria DeAngeli attended the Resource
Center for Religious Institutes Conference in Atlanta,
Georgia October 20-23.
Sister Maria DeAngeli made her annual visit
to St. Benedict Monastery, Canyon, Texas, where two
of our sisters are working to found an independent
Benedictine monastery.
Sister Rachel Dietz attended additional train-
ing for the Spiritual Director Formation Program at
Red Plains Monastery, Piedmont, Oklahoma Novem-
ber 20-21.
St. Scholastica Retreat Center held a very
well-attended Silent Directed Retreat, based on the
Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius, January 7-11. 40
people made the retreat and 10 spiritual directors--

Justpeace is continuing its monthly witness at
the southeastern corner of Creekmore Park on the first
Sunday of each month from 12:15 to 12:45 p.m. to pray
for diplomatic solutions in the war-torn countries of Af-
ghanistan, Iraq, and the Holy Land.
Our monthly film and lecture series continues
on the second Monday of each month, 7 p.m. in the
monastery chapter room. On February 8 we will show
Posada, portraying the struggles of three young men
who, as teenagers, left their homes in Central America
and were detained for months by U.S. immigration of-
ficials. They compare their struggles to Las Posadas,
the Mexican retelling of the Christmas story of Joseph
and Mary’s search for shelter. We will also show films
on March 8, April 12, and May 10.
On January 11 we were honored to host Clima-
tologist Robert McAfee who brought the “Repower Ar-
kansas Road Show” to an enthusiastic group of sisters
and community members.
The sisters have been attending Hispanic Mass-
es at local churches and were guests at the Posada in
St. Jude Thaddeus Church, Waldron.
We are grateful to everyone who helped the
sisters sponsor a young student at Subiaco Academy
whose scholarship, although generous, is not enough to
cover his educational expenses. We still need to raise
$1,000 more for the current academic year. If you would
like to help this worthy student, please contact Sister
Maria De Angeli.
