SISTER PATRICK CINGOLANI

Sister Patrick Cingolani, OSB of St. Scholastica Monastery, Fort Smith, entered into eternal life on November 9, 2010 at the age of 96. She was born January 20, 1914 in Lake Village, AR to Florio and Anna Cingolani. She entered St. Scholastica Convent in 1928 and made her monastic profession on June 24, 1930. She earned her B.S.E. at Mount St. Scholastica College, Atchison, KS in 1957 and received her six-year elementary teaching certificate in 1965. She taught elementary school for 55 years at Sacred Heart School, Charleston; St. Edward, Little Rock; Holy Rosary, Stuttgart; St. Joseph, Paris; St. Benedict, Subiaco; St. Mary, Lake Village; St. Joseph, Pilot Grove, MO. After retiring from teaching in 1987, she spent seven years visiting with the homebound in Morillton and three years in St. Joseph’s Home, Little Rock, working in food service. She retired to St. Scholastica Monastery in 1997.

Sister Patrick is survived by one brother, Orlando (Geraldine) Cingolani, Monticello; two sisters-in-law, Syble Cingolani and Kate Cingolani, Lake Village; one brother-in-law, Pete Dolci, California; many nieces and nephews and the members of her monastic community.

Vespers for the dead were held at 7:30 p.m. Friday, November 12, 2010, in the Monastery Chapel.

The Funeral Mass was held on Saturday, November 13, 2010 at 10:30 a.m. with Rev. David McKillin, OSB, presiding, followed by her burial in the monastery cemetery.

SISTER MARIAN WALBE

Sister Marian Walbe, OSB, was born Mary Cecilia Walbe on November 21, 1916 in Morrison Bluff, Ark. to Joseph and Anna Walbe.  She entered St. Scholastica Convent in 1931 and made her monastic profession on June 24, 1935, taking the name “Marian.”  She earned her B.A. in Education at Avila College, Kansas City, Mo in 1966.  She was a primary school teacher for 55 years at St. Benedict School, Subiaco; St. Mary School, Barling; St. Boniface School, Fort Smith; St. Francis DeSales School, Lebanon, Mo.; St. Theresa School, Little Rock; St. Joseph School, Amarillo, Tx.; St. Ignatius School, Scranton; and St. Joseph School, Paris.  In 1990 she moved to Hesychia House of Prayer, New Blaine, AR, where she was a part of the core community.  She retired to the monastery infirmary in 2009.

Sister Marian is survived by one brother, Joseph Walbe of Fort Smith; four sisters, Anna Lou Frietsche and Juanita Perry, both of Fort Smith; Margie Borengasser of New Blaine and Josephine Basgoll of Gardner, Kan.; three sisters-in-law, Rosetta Walbe and Mary (wife to Joseph) Walbe of Fort Smith and Catherine Walbe of Friendswood, Tex.; two brothers-in-law, Ben Frietsche (husband to Anna Lou) and Ed Borengasser (husband to Margie); many nieces and nephews and her religious community.

Vespers for the dead were held on Monday, February 22.  Her funeral Mass was celebrated on February 23, with Fr. David McKillin, OSB presiding and Abbot Jerome Kodell, OSB and Fr. Bruno Fuhrmann, OSB concelebrating.  She was laid to rest at St. Scholastica Monastery Cemetery under the direction of Fentress Mortuary.

SISTER JANE FLADUNG

Sister Mary Jane Fladung, OSB, formerly known as Sister Mary James, 87, of St. Scholastica Monastery entered into eternal life Wednesday, Sept. 22, 2010, in Olathe, Kan. She entered St. Scholastica Convent as a postulant, Aug. 28, 1938 and made her first profession on June 24, 1941. She received a Bachelor’s Degree in French from Mount St. Scholastica College, Atchison, Kan. and taught at St. Mary School, Barling, Ark; St. Joseph School, Paris, Ark.; St. John School; Brinkley, Ark., St. John School, Fort Smith, Ark; St. Joseph School, Ada, Okla.; St. Joseph School, Billings, Mo.; St. Gabriel School, Kansas City, Mo.; and St. Pius X School, Moberly, Mo.; . In 1969, Sister Jane was among the founding members from St. Scholastica who started a new monastic community, Our Lady of Peace Monastery, in Columbia, Mo., where she served as sub-prioress. In 1976 she became a Vista volunteer and co-founder of Koinonia House, a place for women in crisis situations.

In her later years, Sister Jane taught others how to live in the present moment, teaching by example. She was a present to others reminding them of the presence of Christ with them always.

In 2010, Our Lady of Peace Monastery was dissolved, and Sister Jane transferred to St. Scholastica.

Her funeral Mass was held Saturday, September 25, at St. Scholastica Monastery Chapel, followed by her burial at St. Scholastica Cemetery.

Sister Jane is survived by two sisters, Margie Korte and Rosemary Hogan, both of Ottawa, Kan.; two brothers, Gene Fladung of Louisburg, Kan., and John Fladung of Olathe; many nieces and nephews and her religious community.

She was preceded in death by her parents, two sisters and one brother.

SISTER CORDELIA LANGE

Sister Cordelia Lange, OSB of St. Scholastica Monastery, Fort Smith, entered into eternal life on August 10, 2010 at the age of 94.  She was born on May 4, 1916 in Nazareth, Texas to John and Louise Lange.  She entered St. Scholastica Convent in 1931 and made her monastic profession on June 24, 1932.  She received her state elementary school teaching certificate in 1942. She earned her Bachelor’s Degree in Education from Marymount College, Salina, KS, in 1957 and her Master’s Degree in Theology from St. John University, Collegeville, MN, in 1963.

She taught from 1934 through 1997 except for a one year period, 1941-42, when she worked at St. Joseph Orphanage.  She taught in St. Joseph School, Paris; St. Benedict, Subiaco; St. Joseph, Center Ridge; St. Mary, Barling; St. Joseph, N. Little Rock; St. Augustine, Dardenelle; St. Mary, Altus; and St. Scholastica Academy, Fort Smith.  She spent the last thirty years of her teaching career in St. Joseph School, Amarillo, Texas.  In her nine years as a high school teacher at St. Scholastica Academy, she assisted the formation director in training aspirants and novices.  She retired to St. Scholastica Monastery in 1998.  An accomplished seamstress, Sister Cordelia made vestments and assisted in the monastery gift shop after her retirement.

Sister Cordelia is survived by her sister, Sister Corinne Lange, OSB, the members of her monastic community, and many nieces and nephews.  She was preceded in death by her parents, four brothers and four sisters.

SISTER XAVIER PERONA

Sister Xavier Perona, 90, of St. Scholastica entered into eternal life on Thursday, February 10, 2011. Frank and Carolina Perona welcomed Josephine Catherine into their family Jan. 13, 1921. She entered St. Scholastica Convent in 1936, and on her investing day, she received the name of Sister Xavier. Sister Xavier began her training for nursing in 1940 at St. Joseph Hospital in Boonville, Mo. She worked as a nurse in Dermott, Morrilton and Clarksville in Arkansas and Booneville in Missouri. The last 18 years were spent at the veterans hospital in Fayetteville. She touched the lives of many people in her ministry to the sick.

She was preceded in death by her parents; one sister, Angelina Bersi; and two brothers, John and Louis Perona.

Evening praise will be 7:30 p.m. Monday at St. Scholastica Monastery Chapel. Funeral Mass will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at St. Scholastica Monastery Chapel with burial to follow at St. Scholastica Cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of Fentress Mortuary of Fort Smith.

Sister Xavier is survived by one brother, Frank Perona of Orange, Calif.; nieces and nephews; and her religious community.

SISTER VIVIAN LUYET

Vivian Luyet

Sister Vivian Luyet, OSB, former principal of St. Boniface School and administrator of St. Joseph’s Home, North Little Rock, entered into eternal life on December 1 at the age of 93. She was born on August 23, 1918 in Conway, AR to Lee and Eugenia Moix. She entered St. Scholastica Convent in 1934 and made her monastic profession on June 24, 1937. She earned her Bachelor’s Degree in Education from Mount St. Scholastica College, Atchison, KS in 1958 and her Master’s Degree in Education at Creighton University, Omaha, Neb. in 1964. She taught at St. Winand School, McGehee; Immaculate Conception School, Moberly, Mo.; St. Meinrad School, Prairie View; St. Ignatius School, Scranton; and St. Benedict School, Subiaco. She served as principal of St. Boniface School, Fort Smith, from 1964-1993. Upon her retirement from teaching she served as administrator of St. Joseph’s Home from 1993-1997. After retiring to the monastery in 2008, she continued to help staff the monastery gift shop until a few weeks before her death.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Lee and Eugenia Moix Luyet; four sisters, Catherine Dumboski, Christine Massery, Mary Freyaldenhoven, and Monica Hamling; and eight brothers, Maurice, Emil, Leo, Paul, George, Albert, Joseph, and Eugene. She is survived by nieces and nephew and the members of her religious community.

Fr. Gregory Luyet, Sister Vivian’s great-nephew, presided over her funeral on December 3 at St. Scholastica Monastery.

SISTER HERMANA SIEBENMORGEN

Sister Hermana Siebenmorgen, OSB, of St. Scholastica Monastery, Fort Smith, a retired teacher and principal, entered into eternal life on November 22, 2011 at the age of 94. She was born on September 6, 1917 in Morrison Bluff, AR to Anton and Anna Siebenmorgen. She entered St. Scholastica Convent in 1933 and made her monastic profession on June 24, 1936. She earned her B.S.E. in Education at Mount St. Scholastica College, Atchison, Ks. in 1961, and did graduate study in Library Science at University of Arkansas Conway and Little Rock. She taught for 57 years at Holy Redeemer School, Clarksville; St. Boniface School, Fort Smith; and St. Mary School, Lake Village. The last 34 years of her teaching career (1959-1993) were spent as teacher and principal of St. Edward School, Little Rock. She retired to the monastery in 1993 and assisted her community in many different ways.

She is preceded in death by her parents; four sisters—Ida Hunt, Helen Wewers, Louise Mikijanis, and Antonia Standley; and four brothers—Leo, Lawrence, Stever, and Edward. She is survived by one sister, Martha Vorster, Fort Smith; one brother, Fred Siebenmorgen, Fort Smith; and nieces and nephews.

Vespers for the dead were held on November 24, 2011 at 7:30 p.m. in the Monastery Chapel. The Funeral Mass was held on November 25 at 10:30 a.m. with Rev. David McKillin presiding followed by interment in the monastery cemetery.

SISTER CONSUELLA BAUER

Sister Consuella Bauer, OSB, entered into eternal life on January 3, 2011. In July, 2010, she celebrated 75 years of religious life. She was born on July 29, 1916 in Morrison Bluff, Arkansas to Marcus and Frances Bauer. She entered St. Scholastica Convent in 1931 and made her monastic profession on June 24, 1935. Sister Consuella, a teacher and school administrator, earned her B.A. in Latin, with minors in French, English, and Education at Marymount College, Salina, Kansas in 1942.

She earned her M.A. in Latin, with a minor in Greek, at Catholic University of America, Washington, DC in 1956. She taught in elementary schools in Missouri, Texas, and Arkansas from 1935-47. From 1947-68, she taught English and Latin at St. Scholastica Academy, Fort Smith, also serving as principal for the last nine years of its history. Her advocacy resulted in St. Scholastica Academy’s becoming the first desegregated high school in Arkansas, several years before Little Rock Central was desegregated. When the academy closed in 1968, she served as principal in St. Gabriel School, Kansas City for four years. She returned to teach a final year in St. Anne’s Academy, Fort Smith from 1972-73.

She moved to Little Rock in 1973, serving as Diocesan Superintendent of Schools from 1973-77 and as Diocesan Director of Religious Education from 1977-1985. She then continued to serve in religion and parish work at St. Mary Church, North Little Rock.

Sister Consuella was a gifted poet who, in her later years, enjoyed corresponding with the many students she had mentored as a high school journalism teacher. She continued her interest and advocacy for social justice after her retirement.

Vespers for the Dead and the sharing of memories were held on Tuesday, January 4 at St. Scholastica Monastery. Monsignor John O’Donnell presided over her funeral Mass on Wednesday, January 5. She was buried in St. Scholastica Cemetery.

She is survived by one brother, Linus and his wife Veronica Bauer of Little Rock; two sisters, Pat Presley of Southport, NC, and Connie Bulmaski and her husband Joe of Little Rock; one brother-in-law, Fred Woeltje of Morrison Bluff; nieces, nephews and her religious family.

She was preceded in death by her parents; four sisters, Regina, Cecilia Krallman, Marie Woeltje, Helen Moore; and one brother, Roman Bauer.

SISTER RICHARD WALTER

Sister Richard Walter, OSB, of St. Scholastica Monastery, Fort Smith, entered into eternal life on March 1, 2012 at the age of 96. She was born on November 25, 1915 in Conway, Arkansas, to John and Josephine Walter. She entered St. Scholastica Convent in 1934 and made her monastic profession on June 24, 1937. During her career she was a cook and housekeeper in Immaculate Heart Church, Marche; St. Joseph School, Paris; and Bishop Albert Fletcher’s residence, Little Rock, where she served for eight years. In 1957 she returned to manage the monastery kitchen, a position she served in until her retirement in 1994. Sister Richard’s dinners were known for their beautiful presentation. The sisters who enjoyed her cooking will always remember her southern fried chicken.

An accomplished gardener, Sister Richard planted rows of azaleas outside the monastery kitchen.

She is survived by six sisters, Margaret Parks, Frances McCaig, Mary Stephens, Hilda Hoyt, Martha Lock and Josephine Wood; two brothers, Johnnie and Fred; numerous nieces and nephews; and the members of her monastic community. Preceding her in death were her parents and four brothers, Diederich, Pete, Ed, and Martin.

Vespers for the dead were prayed on March 3 at 7:30 p.m. in the Monastery Chapel. The funeral Mass was held March 4 at 10:30 a.m. in the Monastery Chapel with the Rev. David McKillin, OSB presiding, followed by burial in the monastery cemetery.

SISTER MARY LINUS OBERKOETTER

Sister Mary Linus Oberkoetter, OSB, 89, of St. Scholastica Monastery entered into eternal life on January 1, 2012. Born Rosemary Frances Oberkoetter, she took the name Sister Mary Linus when she entered the novitiate, and made her monastic profession in 1955. During her career, she taught in St. Mary School, Lake Village; and St. Mary School, McGehee; served as a prefect in St. Scholastica Academy; did office work in St. Joseph Hospital, Boonville, Mo.; and served in various positions in the monastery, including chauffeuring and working in the greenhouses and print shop.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Herman and Clara Oberkoetter, and a sister, Sister Hermana Oberkoetter, OSB of St. Joseph Monastery, Tulsa, Ok. She is survived by one sister, Mary Oberkoetter, and one brother, Herman Oberkoetter, of Ozark; and her religious community.

Her funeral Mass was celebrated on January 4 with Rev. David McKillin, OSB, presiding; followed by burial in the monastery cemetery.
